    Field Big yard spaces

    Big Yard, Big Opportunity.

A big yard is an opportunity for design that connects. Field Outdoor Spaces specializes in turning expansive yards into layered outdoor settings that feel purposeful, cohesive, and inviting. From sweeping lawns and large patios to planted transitions, built-in gathering areas, and dramatic stone features, we bring our design and build expertise to large-scale sites so your yard feels more than just “big”—it feels intentional.

Why Choose Field for Your Big Yard Design?

    1

    Strategic Master-Planning

Large yards require vision. We map out zones, transitions and relationships between elements so your outdoor space flows and feels unified, not disjointed.

    2

    Scale-Savvy Craftsmanship

At large scale, detail matters. From grading and hardscape to planting and lighting, we bring the same precision and craftsmanship you expect, just on a grander canvas.

    3

    Multi-Functional Livability

Big yards are more than open land — they’re outdoor rooms, entertaining hubs, play zones, garden retreats. We design for how you’ll use your space, not just how it looks.

    4

    Long-Term Maintenance & Beauty

More space means more potential maintenance. We choose materials, plants and layouts that mature elegantly and sustainably so your large yard stays beautifully manageable for years to come.

    Frequently asked questions

    01
I have a dark, leaved maple in my front yard and I can’t get anything to work underneath. Do you have any thoughts?
    −
Many ‘Crimson King’ Maples have been planted in front yards in the last 30-40 years. What you are experiencing is common. This variety of maple has a very thick canopy which leads to a deep shade that is hard for most plants to thrive in. Additionally, this tree pulls tons of water out of the soil AND exudes chemicals through the roots that inhibit other plants. When we consider a design for a front yard with a Norway maple we consider three things (1) have an arborist thin the canopy of the tree to let more light in; (2) consider non-plant structures like steppers, gravel areas and boulders as well as pots and bird baths and (3) only use the toughest of plants. Being diligent with watering after the installation is crucial in these conditions.
    02
I see a lot of little front patios cropping up in my neighborhood - can we incorporate something like that in the design?
    +
Front sitting patios are the modern equivalent of the “front porch”. They bring a sense of life and community to neighborhoods – so we love them! These are great features even if you don’t sit out there – choose a couple nice colored, all-weather Adirondack chairs and your front will have a composed look throughout the season.
    03
I find most front-foundation plantings boring – what can we do to make it more interesting?
    +
The traditional foundation-planting IS pretty boring. We recommend either extending the bed or designing an island bed further out in the yard. By lobing the foundation bed out on one side we are often able to get a tree or other key plant in the design and can incorporate curved bedlines and swaths of plants that are much nicer than a line of plants as seen in many foundation plantings and we love island planting beds further out in the landscape because they can be seen from inside the house and take the pressure off the foundation bed being the first thing you see.
    04
Can we do veggies in the front yard?
    +
There are many good reasons for doing veggies in the front yard. Front yards are generally sunny, its usually easy to drag a hose to the front, and front yards don’t have as much “going on” as backyards. With raised planters, a surrounding gravel area and other elements like trellises and border plantings, a veggie area can look neat and composed even in the most formal of neighborhoods.

    What Field
    Clients Say

    • I was watering last night and walking around my yard noticing the landscaping. It is so beautiful. You did such a thoughtful design that is balanced with similar plants in many locations creating lovely textures and colors. The prairie is thriving. I feel like my home is a showpiece in my neighborhood!
      -- Pam E. – Golden Valley
    • We are so very happy with our new outdoor patio!! James and crew did amazing, professional and conscientious work right down to clean up and seeding. We love the boulder placement and stepping stones! And Aaron Johnson’s team made a perfect back stoop!
      -- Sharon H. – Minneapolis
    • We love our front yard landscape. It is basically self-sustaining and the plants have done great through the drought. We just cut things back every once in a while and let it do its thing!
      -- Mark & Lisa L. – Minneapolis
    • We couldn't be happier with our backyard transformation by Field. Our new construction yard started as a boring square of sod, and ended with 6 trees, a fire pit, and beautiful perennial beds of native plants that fully matured in just 2 years. Our formerly sterile lawn is now a lush secret garden full of bees, butterflies, and even fireflies!
      -- Megan C. – St Paul
