img Personal Picks

Favorite Plant
Swiss Stone Pine – This is such a great upright evergreen. Medium to slow growth rate. Never gets winter burn and stays tight with great form for its whole life.

Outdoor Feature
Sauna-scaping! I love that people are getting into sauna-ing and committing to this ceremony of health focus. I love creating stone paths, wood benches, lush plantings and distinct boulder arrangements to make this experience feel natural and resorative.

Favorite Place
The Driftless Region. The area around Welch Village is my favorite because it is close and you can slip down there on a Saturday for a ride or hike but the whole area in Minnesota, Wisconsin, Iowa and Illinois fills my heart with joy.

I think the best landscapes feel bountiful and full but also imminently manageable. So manageable bountifulness?

My goal is to help each client find both clarity and genuine excitement as we shape the vision for their outdoor space. I find it easy to get inspired by a new project.  When I talk with clients, I’m listening for how that person will truly experience the environment. Maybe that’s a peaceful view from the kitchen window while doing dishes, the energy of hosting friends for a backyard barbecue, a natural play area for children, or the joy of harvesting vegetables from their own garden. Ultimately, I want the landscape to be more than just a design; I want it to make a meaningful difference in their daily life.

img Background & Journey

I always knew I wanted to do work that enabled people to experience “quality of life”. That journey led me to narrow my focus to food and cooking, or landscaping.  I spent some time in the restaurant world and quickly discovered that much of the creativity was in the initial envisioning of a restaurant.  In landscaping, I found almost limitless capacity for learning and creativity.  Even now, I love being the person at a backyard gathering who gets an arm tapped for questions about a plant or a landscape issue in their yard.

Growing up in the suburbs, I was surrounded by the standard aesthetic of rock mulch, junipers, and big random rocks on the corner of the lot.  I remember the day in high school when I looked out a window at the Hennepin County Library and saw a vibrant, installed prairie. That juxtaposition stuck with me. It ignited a desire to bring a sense of full-blooded naturalness to residential landscapes.

Before founding Field, I spent seven years in sales support for a global telecommunications firm. Traveling the world during the rise of employee-centered cultures at companies like Patagonia and Microsoft inspired me to think about how a business could operate.  In 2005, I started Field with a simple but clear goal: to create the kind of company I actually wanted to work for. One that makes a tangible difference in how people experience their lives.

Landscaping is one of the few remaining industries where craftsmen still use their hands, heads, and hearts to see a project through from the first tear-out to the final stone. In the modern world, I think this is a unique opportunity and one that continues to inspire me.

My Approach

Our goal is to deliver the highest possible value for whatever investment level fits your needs. We start by defining your priorities and aligning those with a clear budget and scope.  From there, the fun and creativity begin.  We can maximize the features, livability, and the unique character of your space within that established tier.

Expertise

The concept of a courtyard still inspires me.  It provides an intimate space to connect with family and friends, experience the passing of seasons, and interact with the natural world.  I love creating that type of outdoor room in the landscape.

Memorable Projects

A Standout Moment

In 2025, Field won an International APLD Gold Award for a project we designed and installed with a long-time client.  We first worked with them to create a really cool dog-scape, and when they made the move to a ritzier neighborhood, they wanted their new landscape to feel unique and personal.  It is so rewarding to work with a client on a second project.  The trust is already there, and you get the opportunity to really understand their personality and what excites them.  Working so closely with them allowed us to achieve a balance of formality and scruffy wildness that makes the landscape unique and remarkable.

img Outside of Field

I enjoy biking with my twin 12-year-old boys and a group of friends.  I’m both a gravel biker and a mountain biker.  Both offer incredible ways to explore greater Minnesota and beyond.  Gravel biking brings me to the dusty hills of the Driftless Region, the sandy gravel of Central Minnesota, and the forest roads near Grand Marais.  There is amazing mountain biking in Crosby Ironton, the Iron Range, and Northwest Arkansas.  The Twin Cities have great hidden pockets for both types of riding.
