    Surrounded by Trees

A small-yard landscape to maximize a screen porch/deck project focusing on immersion into a maturing woods

The concept of “shinrin-yoku” means “forest bathing” and this project focused on how we could use a maturing woods to create a low-maintenance landscape with power. We designed and planted a mix of native trees – tamarack, linden, serviceberry, alder, ironwood – with low-maintenance swaths of perennials and shrub plantings. The crew did a great job of keeping the superior trap rock work natural so it feels like the North Shore. White Pines were spaded in to create instant privacy and the composite deck and board wall gives visual structure and movement.

    The Blueprint

Landscape Key Elements - What's Unique in this Design

    Composite Boardwalk

The boardwalk & deck connects with stone steppers to lead you through the space and doubles as an area for gathering and grilling.

    In the woods

Immediately after installation the trees felt immersive. Looking at the before photo, you can see the trees are all new yet you still feel like you are in the woods.

At the end of the boardwalk

A grouping of Aralia in lanterns gives interest to the end of the boardwalk and provides a focal point.

    Bluestone steppers & gravel

The oversized bluestone steppers and gravel give a modern look.  The color of these steppers help tie into the trap rock and north shore feel.

    What Our Customer Says...

“We have our own arboretum in the city! We L-O-V-E the tamarack!“
