From Steep to Stylish: Smart Slope Solutions

Slopes present both a design challenge and an amazing opportunity. At Field Outdoor Spaces, we specialize in turning sloped areas into dynamic, beautiful, and functional outdoor environments—using carefully selected local rocks, plantings, or a blend of both. We’ll guide you through every step—design choices, budgeting, maintenance, and more—so you can confidently transform your hillside into a standout feature of your home.

    Why Choose Field’s Slopes?

    1

    Locally Sourced Materials

From natural plantings, including native plants, to locally quarried stone, we use materials that belong in Minnesota landscapes. This keeps slopes looking natural while improving stability and sustainability.

    2

    Horticultural Solutions

We design with plantings that do more than look good — they control erosion, add seasonal color, and thrive with less maintenance. Our designers choose species that fit your slope’s conditions and your lifestyle.

    3

    Creativity

Slopes are never one-size-fits-all. We combine plantings, rock accents, and design features to transform steep spaces into beautiful, functional parts of your yard.

    4

    Expert Craftsmanship

Whether it’s grading, planting, or integrating stonework, our team brings the experience needed to create slopes that last — blending strength, beauty, and ecological health.

    Frequently asked questions

    01
I don’t want to mow my front slope. Do I need a wall?
    −
No, in most cases you don’t NEED a wall. We work with clients to balance “non-plant structures” like walls, rockwork and planters with low-maintenance plantings. For most projects, you can choose how much wall or planting you want based on your goals for budget and aesthetics.
    02
The mulch keeps spilling out on the sidewalk - do I need a little wall or edging there?
    +
We recommend cutting the level of the slope down so that the soil level is 2-3" below the sidewalk. That way, the sidewalk acts as your "edging". Also, we use double-shredded bark mulch, which does a good job of "knitting together" and staying put.
    03
How can I plant my slope while keeping maintenance requirements to a minimum?
    +
We recommend two things to keep maintenance down. (1) Use plants that cover the full bed. The quickest plants to cover the ground are low-growing shrubs such as dwarf-bush honeysuckle or Gro-low sumac. But the right selection of vigorous, large-canopy ornamental grasses and flowering plants can also do a great job. (2) Use non-plant structures like ornamental boulders, planters, walls, and street number signs. These not only take up space in a low-maintenance way but also "take pressure off the plants" and make the slope look great throughout the seasons.
    04
Is a ground cover like no-mow fescue or clover good for a slope?
    +
They can be great options for slopes, but keep in mind that there is no "silver bullet." Every plant has an Achilles heel and will require maintenance at some point. For instance, no-mow fescue should be mowed each fall and overseeded to ensure that it stays robust and continues to keep out other plants (weeds). On some slopes, this maintenance may be difficult. Clover also has years where it burns out and for some neighborhoods, can look a little "farmy". We can help walk through the maintenance considerations and aesthetic attributes of any plant selection for a slope, and help you make the best decision.

    What Field
    Clients Say

    • I was watering last night and walking around my yard noticing the landscaping. It is so beautiful. You did such a thoughtful design that is balanced with similar plants in many locations creating lovely textures and colors. The prairie is thriving. I feel like my home is a showpiece in my neighborhood!
      -- Pam E. – Golden Valley
    • We are so very happy with our new outdoor patio!! James and crew did amazing, professional and conscientious work right down to clean up and seeding. We love the boulder placement and stepping stones! And Aaron Johnson’s team made a perfect back stoop!
      -- Sharon H. – Minneapolis
    • We love our front yard landscape. It is basically self-sustaining and the plants have done great through the drought. We just cut things back every once in a while and let it do its thing!
      -- Mark & Lisa L. – Minneapolis
    • We couldn't be happier with our backyard transformation by Field. Our new construction yard started as a boring square of sod, and ended with 6 trees, a fire pit, and beautiful perennial beds of native plants that fully matured in just 2 years. Our formerly sterile lawn is now a lush secret garden full of bees, butterflies, and even fireflies!
      -- Megan C. – St Paul
