Frequently asked questions

My wall is leaning; when should I replace it?

We see a lot of timber walls and concrete walls that are nearing their “expiration” date. While most walls are not going to fall over, we find that clients prioritize wall replacement when they just can’t stand to look at it any longer. We work with clients to determine the best replacement material and approach for their budget and aesthetic goals.

Boulders walls seem expensive. If I am looking to save money, should I consider a modular block wall instead?

Boulder walls and modular block walls are similar in cost, depending on access (can we get to it with a machine?) and other factors. In most cases, the choice of wall materials is based on a client’s style choice. More modern or formal landscapes demand a more architectural wall like modular block or wall stone. With more natural styles, boulder walls look best. Field is “wall agnostic” and works with clients to find the best solution for the space.

I have a small yard. Are boulders too big for my space?

We find that boulders are ideal for smaller spaces. In small spaces it is often necessary to accommodate funky changes and boulders can flex well for that purpose. Whereas an architectural wall needs more definitive starts, stops and step downs.

I love ornamental boulders, but I’ve heard they are expensive. Is that true and are they worth it?

No they are not that expensive and YES they are totally worth it! Boulders cost about $200/ton and one large boulder weights about ¼ of a ton. One big rock costs about $50 plus installation. We think that boulders do some “heavy lifting” in landscape design. They give the plants something to organize around, and the rock(s) are there throughout the season. Rocks are also great for lighting and for planting bulbs for a nice spring combination.
