Plants That Create Structure, Beauty & Balance

Planting is where a landscape truly starts to feel alive. At Field Outdoor Spaces, we design planting plans that bring structure, texture, and seasonal color to your yard—whether it’s a full softscape overhaul or enhancements to existing beds. Through thoughtful plant selection and careful placement, we create outdoor spaces that feel natural, cohesive, and inviting from the day they’re installed and as they grow in over time.

    Why Choose Field’s Planting?

    1

    Designed for Growth

We think beyond installation. Every plant is chosen for how it will mature, fill in, and shape your outdoor space over time.

    2

    Layered & Intentional

Our planting designs balance structure, softness, and seasonality. We use a mix of heights, textures, and colors to create depth and visual interest all year.

    3

    Right Plant, Right Place

From sun exposure to soil type to drainage, our plans are rooted in what each space actually needs—so your plants thrive, not struggle.

    4

    Sustainable & Low-Maintenance Choices

We prioritize hardy, climate-appropriate plants that look beautiful without demanding constant attention, giving you a landscape that’s easy to enjoy.

    Frequently asked questions

    01
My yard has a lot of rabbits. What kinds of plantings will they not eat?
    −
We are living in “the time of the rabbits”. The main goal is to get any planting to the three-year mark healthy and vigorous, and there are three principles: (1) select many “rabbit less-favored” plants. This includes plants that are “smelly”, such as catmint and allium, or are just not edible, like ferns. (2) protect plants that are most vulnerable at the times they are most vulnerable – this includes trees and shrubs in the winter and newly planted tender plants. These are generally quick tasks that make a huge difference when done at the right time. Every year, the protection needs go down 50%. (3) fill gaps in the planting – every year plan on a budget for “fill planting”. You’ll start to notice that this filling keeps you ahead of any “browsing” the rabbits might incur. Come to our Kerplantz Plant Sale in June – it makes this task easy!
    02
My neighbors had a company install a front planting with a bunch of evergreens, trees, and shrubs. It looked really good when they put it in, but after a couple of years, it looked jumbled. Can you help me with a plan that has better spacing?
    +
Our planting design is based on describing the pros and cons of all our plant selections and having a frank discussion about the long-term maintenance requirements. We wouldn’t advocate for a planting where long-term structural plants, like evergreens, trees, and shrubs, are planted in a way that would require their hard pruning or removal. These plants should be placed in locations where they can thrive with minimal maintenance over the long term!
    03
I really like my perennial plantings to have “space around them”. Can you help with a planting like that?
    +
Yes! There are two different ways to do a “spaced out perennial planting”. The maintenance challenge of this approach is that the open space between plants needs to be covered in some way to prevent other plants from growing there (weeds!). To account for this, you can either opt for a fabric and rock mulch bed or adopt a long-term mulching approach, where you refresh the mulch every 2-3 years. Both are viable options, but in general, we think it is more fun to create a “plant community” approach where you fill all the gaps with other plants. This type of planting can still look “structured” when contrasting plants are chosen.

    What Field
    Clients Say

    • I was watering last night and walking around my yard noticing the landscaping. It is so beautiful. You did such a thoughtful design that is balanced with similar plants in many locations creating lovely textures and colors. The prairie is thriving. I feel like my home is a showpiece in my neighborhood!
      -- Pam E. – Golden Valley
    • We are so very happy with our new outdoor patio!! James and crew did amazing, professional and conscientious work right down to clean up and seeding. We love the boulder placement and stepping stones! And Aaron Johnson’s team made a perfect back stoop!
      -- Sharon H. – Minneapolis
    • We love our front yard landscape. It is basically self-sustaining and the plants have done great through the drought. We just cut things back every once in a while and let it do its thing!
      -- Mark & Lisa L. – Minneapolis
    • We couldn't be happier with our backyard transformation by Field. Our new construction yard started as a boring square of sod, and ended with 6 trees, a fire pit, and beautiful perennial beds of native plants that fully matured in just 2 years. Our formerly sterile lawn is now a lush secret garden full of bees, butterflies, and even fireflies!
      -- Megan C. – St Paul
