    I have a big yard; how can I have less grass?

    Designing landscapes is all about defining different use areas and making those areas have visual organization and flow. Our approach to having less lawn is to define a lawn size and shape that allows us to incorporate non-lawn areas in an organized way. Woods, shrub masses, vegetable gardens, and naturalistic seeded areas are all excellent lawn replacements in a well-organized design.

    How can I create more privacy in my backyard?

    The best privacy is accomplished with “sleight-of-hand.” We want to gain privacy without it looking like we are trying to gain privacy. This includes evergreens, deciduous trees and shrubs organized in groupings that flow with the rest of the landscape and feel like they were always there. Always plant privacy plantings in areas where they can thrive. Planting in deep shade is almost always disappointing. Trees may have to be pruned or even removed to get the right type of privacy planting that will thrive.

    The previous owner of this house was an avid gardener. Can you help us simplify the gardens a little?

    Yes, we always recommend converting a landscape to the amount and type that you have the time, interest, and resources to maintain. It is stressful and damaging to act like you can maintain gardens that are too big and complicated. Problematic weeds and trees will take hold, and it will become increasingly expensive to get to the right landscape. Simplifying a landscape can be one of the most satisfying projects because it reduces stress and sets you up for long-term success.

    Do you do decks and fences?

    If all you need is a deck or a fence, we recommend you look for contractors who focus specifically on those features. But, as part of a holistic landscape design and implementation, we definitely incorporate decks and fences. We have long-time partners who have worked as part of our team for over 12 years and who can seamlessly bring these elements to life as part of our design and implementation.
